Whether you need a pickup truck for use as a work vehicle, a minivan to take the kids to soccer practice, or a small, fuel-efficient car, there are several ways you can find what you are looking for. Your local classified ads or swap sheets can be a valuable source of information; online listings like Craig's List or used car websites are often the most efficient way to find all the information you need about a particular vehicle.
2. Do your homework. Once you have narrowed down your choice to a short list of cars, find out everything you can about each vehicle before you make a purchasing decision. Check over the vehicle maintenance record, if available; check the odometer for the mileage, and use the VIN number to run a Carfax or similar report on the history of the vehicle. If you are buying from a private owner, make sure he or she can provide you with the title for the car.
3. Have the vehicle inspected. Ask a mechanic you know and trust to make a thorough inspection of the vehicle; he or she will be able to let you know if there are any mechanical problems that may need to be resolved.
